Electrical Safety Tips
Electrical Safety for Children
- Plastic inserts can be used for unused wall outlets, or simply by creatively arranging your furniture to block them.
- Hide extension cords behind furniture or use a hide-a-cord device.
- Store and put electrical devices and appliances out of reach of curious children.
- Educate your children to obey warning signs.
General Safety for Electrical Appliances
- Keep all electrical devices away from sources of water.
- Check your appliances for broken and/or damaged parts and cords regularly.
- Limit the number of appliances plugged into one outlet to prevent overloading a circuit.
- Disconnect immediately if your appliance blows a fuse, trip a circuit breaker and/or has given you a shock. Have it repaired or replaced.
- Do not use the electrical appliance or equipment if you realised that there are cuts or damages to the cord. Have it repaired or replaced.
- Turn off all appliances and lights that are on the circuit immediately before you change a fuse. Do not replace a fuse with a coin or any metal object.
- Always use a flashlight. Do not fix a fuse in the dark.
Electrical Fire Safety
- Do not attempt to put water on an electrical fire. Use a dry fire extinguisher instead.
- Be aware of the location of the fuse box and circuit breaker as well as how to operate them.
- Replace any light switches that are hot to the touch.
- Replace any lights that flicker.
- Replace any electrical devices that put off mild electric shocks.
